As the exterminator finished reading the note, a loud, drone began to sound, seemingly from every angle. The dim light coming from under the door began to intensify, swallowing the plain hallway in unknowable brightness. Blind and deaf, the exterminator dropped his equipment and clipboard and groped for the brushed nickel doorknob. Cold against his sweaty palm, the doorknob vibrated at a primally familiar frequency. The exterminator flung the door open, stumbled forward two paces, and dissolved as if by osmosis into what he could only imagine looked like a vertical swimming pool or a solid monolith of champagne jello. He couldn’t imagine what was to come next, but he knew that whatever it was had been willed there just for him, before time and before knowledge.
